Well gang, NASCAR finally got the 2012 Daytona 500 in the books!  For those on the East Coast, the race ended around 1 am Tuesday morning.  For me, I made the 5000 mile round trip from Yuma to Daytona only to watch the Daytona 500 from my own comfortable chair, on my flat screen HDTV!  However, we did see some fantastic late models, big block modifieds, and UMP modifieds with a few of the NASCAR drivers in the cockpit at Volusia Speedway Park.  Our visit was in the middle of the Dirt Nationals at that facility.  Additionally, we did get to see the Gatorade Duels, the Camping World Trucks, and the Nationwide races at Daytona.

From the looks of the first week of the season some of us did reasonably well, and a couple of us “ate the big one”!

The big winner this week was Jimmy, who successfully picked Matt Kenseth to win the 2012 Daytona 500.  Both Carole, and yours truly, picked Dale Earnhardt, Jr. to take home the Harley J. Earl trophy as the victor.  Notwithstanding the fact that Kenseth won the race, Dale Jr. had a very strong horse all evening, lurking around the top 10 all night.  Had Dale Jr. gotten by Biffle on that last restart, I think that he had something for Kenseth by the finish line!  Some of you may think that I am somewhat partial, however I do claim membership in Junior Nation, I do think that Dale,Jr. might have had a legitimate shot at Kenseth.

Now for the bad news.  There were two of us who “really took a whoppin'” on Monday.  Carlton and Jerry both picked “Mr. Three-Time”, Jeff Gordon, to garner all the marbles.  But it was not in the cards for ol Jeffie to claim victory at “The World Center of Speed” this year.

This weekend the boys are coming out West to Phoenix and then on to Las Vegas.  I am looking forward to my weekend at Las Vegas for both some fantastic NASCAR races at LVMS, and two nights of late models, modifieds, and the World of Outlaw Sprint Car racing at the dirt track!

TIL THEN, PULL YOUR BELTS DOWN TIGHT, FLIP YOUR VISOR DOWN, AND LET’S GO RACIN”
