“If you can start your engine at Talladega, you have a chance to win the race.”
That was a quote from Darrell Waltrip prior to the start of Sunday’s Aaron’s 400 at Talladega Superspeedway! Sunday that fact was proven to be very accurate. Just go ask the small, semi-underfunded, Bob Jenkins owned, Front Row Motorsports #34 Ford team, driven by the castaway from Roush-Fenway Racing, David Ragan.
David Ragan was the surprise winner of Sunday’s rain-delayed, wreck-marred Aaron’s 499 Sprint Cup Series race at Talladega Superspeedway.
Ragan took the lead on the final lap, and got his first Talladega victory of his career.
His Front Row Motorsports teammate David Gilliland was second.
Third was Carl Edwards of Roush Fenway Racing. Rounding out the top five were Michael Waltrip of Michael Waltrip Racing while points-leader Jimmie Johnson of Hendrick Motorsports was fifth.
Movers and Shakers
It is no surprise that none of our players went out on that limb to pick David Ragan to win the Aaron’s 499. This is only his second Sprint Cup win, the first was with Roush-Fenway Racing at the July Daytona race a couple of years ago. However, there were three players, “Dan The Numbers Cruncher”, Carlton, and “Richard The NASCAR Picker” who picked the third place finisher, Carl Edwards. By pickeing Edwards and they were the highest scoring players at Talladega, gathering up 42 points.
Karen had Jeff Gordon as her choice at Talladega, making her the second highest scoring playe, logging 34 points. Following Karen, Edie was the third highest scoring player gathering 32 points on Stenhouse’s 13th place finish. Following Edie’s good fortunes at Talladega, was “Bernie The Bay Area Bandit”, Jim, Jerry, and “Jeremy The Coach”, all had put all their marbles on Dale Earnhardt, Jr., each gaining 27 points.
The Talladega race shook up the standings, whereby, most every player shifted his/her position this week, with the exception of the leader Karen, Dawn, Richard, and Bernie.
The biggest mover this week is “Jason The Eclectic Hippie”! Jason’s choice of Greg Biffle really put a hurting on his chances for some first segment money! Jason plunged five places in the standings, plummeting from 5th all the way down to 10th place! Marc, likewise, did not fair too well, falling three spots from 9th to 12th place. Both Carole, Sue, and “David The Mudslinging Throttle Jockey” slipped down one spot, respectively.
On the positive side of the movement scale Edie, Jerry, and Jim all climbed up two places in the standings. Dan, Zee, Jeremy, Carlton, and your truly all slipped up one spot in the standings.
With the finish of the Talladega race, we are one quarter through the 2013 season, and nearing the end of the first segment!
There are now just two races left in this segment, and the podium finishes are now starting to get a little more clearer. Nevertheless, there are still some spots in the standings that are being hotly contested, like the fourth and fifth place spots, as well as second place! these next two races will be very crucial to the standings!
Next week NASCAR travels to the small town of Darlington, South Carolina.
TIL NEXT TIME, PULL YOUR GLOVES UP, FLIP YOUR VISOR DOWN, AND LET’S GO RACIN’!
